Mass Defections to APC Signal South-South Shift Ahead of 2027 — Okpebholo

The wave of high-profile defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo and Delta States has been described as a clear sign of the party’s growing strength in the South-South and a potential game-changer for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking during a grand rally held in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed members of the Delta Unity Group (DUG) into the ruling party, hailing the move as a major milestone in the region’s political realignment.

“We have started in Edo, and now it is time for Delta. 2027 is already possible,” Okpebholo said while praising the leadership qualities of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Chairman, Chiedu Ebie, who played a key role in facilitating the defection of DUG members to the APC.

“This is the time for the South-South to shine. Chiedu is an intelligent young man who knows the right time to move. It is Delta’s turn,” he added.

Ganduje described the Delta Unity Group as “great fighters of democracy” and emphasized that the APC now enjoys a majority in the state with three senators, several federal and state lawmakers, and over 60 percent of former PDP supporters now in its fold.

“With the calibre of leaders in Delta APC, what we need now is unity—unity of purpose to win elections and provide quality governance to the people,” Ganduje stated.

He also announced plans to convene a major stakeholders’ meeting to harmonize interests and strengthen the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chiedu Ebie, while addressing the gathering, noted that the decision of DUG to join the APC was rooted in a shared vision for good governance, inclusion, and development under the leadership of President Tinubu.

Earlier in the day, the APC delegation visited the Dein of Agbor, Dr. Benjamin Ikenchukwu, Keagborekuzi I, who urged President Tinubu to prioritize peace and security as a foundation for national growth.

Among the dignitaries at the rally were Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North), Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC Aeke Ibori-Suenu, former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, and other prominent party figures.
