Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially renamed The Polytechnic Ibadan after the late former governor of the state, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo. The institution will now be known as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Makinde made the announcement on Thursday during the state burial ceremony held in honour of the late Olunloyo, who passed away a few weeks ago.
Dr. Olunloyo, who governed the old Oyo State between October and December 1983, holds the distinction of being the first Ibadan indigene to serve as the state’s governor. Beyond politics, he also served as rector of the Polytechnic, leaving a lasting impact on the institution.
Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde stated that the renaming was a gesture to immortalize Olunloyo’s legacy and contributions to education and leadership in the state.
“This is a symbolic way to honour a man who gave so much to this state both in leadership and academia. Henceforth, the institution will bear his name – Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan,” Makinde said.
The announcement has been met with a mix of emotions, with many recognizing it as a fitting tribute to one of Oyo’s most cerebral leaders.
