Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged his support for Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, ahead of anticipated political battles, declaring that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not secure victories in Oyo and Osun states.
Makinde made the declaration on Wednesday during the commissioning of the Stadium Roundabout/Oke Baale Roundabout/Ilesa Garage Roundabout dual carriageway in Osogbo, Osun State. He criticized recent remarks by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, who had expressed confidence in his party’s ability to claim both states.
Ganduje had stated in Akure, after the re-election of Ondo State Governor Lucky Akeredolu on November 16, that the APC’s next target was to consolidate its hold on the South-West geopolitical zone, specifically Oyo and Osun states. However, Makinde dismissed Ganduje’s optimism as detached from the political realities on the ground.
“The people of Osun State must come first, and they have been put first. Two years ago, they made a political choice and moved from one political party to the PDP. Someone, after the Edo and Ondo elections, said they are coming for Osun and Oyo. People, are you not waiting for them? You will show them,” Makinde said.
Makinde, who described himself and Adeleke as “true progressives,” also assured that the PDP would challenge the APC’s victories in Edo and Ondo states in court. “The game is not over in Edo and Ondo. We are a law-abiding party, and we believe that the corpse they hurriedly buried will be exhumed,” he added.
Commending Adeleke for completing the road project initiated by former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Makinde lauded the Osun Governor for prioritizing governance over partisanship. “This road was started by Governor Aregbesola. Adeleke didn’t say, ‘I won’t do it because I won’t take the credit.’ He has completed it. This is cementing your position of leadership,” Makinde said.
Adeleke, in his remarks, paid tribute to Aregbesola for initiating the Osogbo Ring Road project and reaffirmed his commitment to completing unfinished projects inherited from previous administrations.
Addressing road safety, Adeleke expressed concern over increasing accidents on newly completed roads, attributing them to overspeeding and traffic violations. “I appeal to road users to be safety-conscious. Security agencies and road safety authorities must enforce safety codes on our brand-new roads, while the Ministry of Works should consider constructing speed breakers where necessary,” he said.
Adeleke also emphasized the importance of responsible governance and assured residents of continued improvements across various sectors in the state.
