Magnus Abe Urges Students to Embrace Politics

PORT HARCOURT — Former Senator and 2023 governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State, Magnus Abe, has called on Nigerian students to actively engage in politics and nation-building, even as they pursue their academic goals.

Abe made the remarks through his former campaign spokesperson, Dr. Bethel Oko-Jaja, during a one-day colloquium held in Port Harcourt on Saturday. The event, organised by the Progressive Students Network (PSN) in celebration of Abe’s 60th birthday, brought together members of the academic community and political stakeholders.

“While the primary responsibility of students is to study and graduate, it is equally important for them to stay informed about political developments in their state and the nation,” Abe said. “Decisions made by elected leaders directly impact your future. That’s why you must be politically aware and vote for candidates who genuinely care about your welfare.”

He emphasized the power of students as watchdogs of democracy, urging them to form alliances to critically assess political aspirants and support those who demonstrate a commitment to education, public welfare, and good governance.

“The students can unite, scrutinize candidates across party lines, and decide who best represents their interests. That is how we build a better Nigeria,” he added.

In a show of support for academic excellence, Senator Abe awarded N400,000 scholarship grants each to five PhD students from various tertiary institutions in the state.

Dr. Parry Benson, Abe’s spokesperson, commended the students for organizing the event, which also featured the unveiling of a Festschrift titled Politics, Law, and Nation Building—a collection of essays in honour of the former lawmaker.

“This is one of the most thoughtful tributes I’ve witnessed. It reflects the values Abe stands for—principle, integrity, and commitment to the educational advancement of Rivers State,” Benson said.

PSN President, Woji Enyindah, praised Abe’s legacy in the education sector, describing him as a foremost advocate for academic development in the state.

“In collaboration with the Progressive Lecturers Network, we felt it was necessary to celebrate a man who has done more for education in Rivers than most,” Enyindah stated.

Separately, at another event organized by the Igbo Concerned Citizens in Rivers State, a book titled Ambition is Not Treason—authored by Benson—was launched to further commemorate Senator Abe’s contributions to politics and leadership.

The celebrations mark a milestone in Abe’s public service career, underscoring his influence both in governance and in shaping the next generation of leaders.
