The Labour Party National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC), led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has reaffirmed its full support for Peter Obi’s participation in ongoing coalition talks with other opposition leaders, dismissing claims that the 2023 presidential candidate is acting independently.
In a statement released by Ken Asogwa, Special Adviser (Media) to Senator Usman, the LP-NCC criticized remarks from a faction of the party led by suspended former chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, who reportedly disapproved of Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts.
“The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to reports suggesting that certain former members of our party, led by the suspended chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, have voiced disapproval over the participation of our 2023 presidential candidate, His Excellency Peter Obi, in the ongoing coalition movement aimed at rescuing Nigeria from the failed APC administration in 2027,” the statement read.
Asogwa stressed that Obi’s involvement in the coalition aligns with the founding principles of the Labour Party, which include tackling insecurity, hunger, and poor governance.
“It is baffling that individuals expelled for anti-party activities now seek to question a move so clearly rooted in national interest,” he said, questioning the motives of Abure and his supporters.
The LP-NCC also addressed the faction’s insistence on a controversial 2024 national convention, which the Supreme Court has reportedly declared illegal. The committee described the reference to the event as “comical” and an act of “flagrant contempt of the Supreme Court’s judgment.”
Reaffirming Peter Obi’s right to run for president in 2027 on the Labour Party’s platform, the committee stated that, should the current coalition talks fail, Obi remains the party’s legitimate and preferred option.
The statement concluded by urging the public to disregard any statements from the Abure-led group, calling them “impostors masquerading as party leaders,” and directed Nigerians to rely solely on information from the office of the National Caretaker Committee.
“We wholeheartedly welcome the coalition movement driven by the Nigerian people,” Asogwa said, “and reaffirm Peter Obi’s commitment to the collective goal of national rescue.”
