The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Zephaniah Jisalo, has stated that the Supreme Court ruling on Local Government Autonomy will significantly enhance the socio-economic development of the nation by empowering the grassroots.
Speaking in Abuja at the Annual Retreat on Performance Management System (PMS), organized by the ministry, Jisalo emphasized the positive impact of the ruling.
The seven-justice panel of the apex court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, declared that the 774 local government councils in the country should independently manage their funds.
Jisalo highlighted that one of the ministry’s key objectives is to oversee local government operations, promote economic development and ensure security in rural communities.
“The autonomy will foster development in local governments. With the autonomy granted to LGs, the staff of the ministry must perform its constitutional responsibilities to better the lives of the citizens,” he said.
He added that the state assemblies will legislate on the activities of local governments, including the tenure of local government administrations.
