ABUJA — The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has advised Nigerians to acquire basic combat skills as part of essential survival training in the face of growing insecurity.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, General Musa likened learning self-defence to acquiring everyday skills such as driving and swimming, stressing that it should be treated as a survival instinct rather than a wartime necessity.
“That one should be taken as learning driving, learning how to swim. Whether we have war or not, it is a survival instinct,” he said. “In Europe, swimming is compulsory; learning and teaching about security is equally compulsory because you must understand what security is.”
The Defence Chief further recommended that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) integrate unarmed combat training into its programme to equip graduates with basic self-defence skills against potential threats.
He emphasized that national security is a collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and situationally aware in order to quickly identify suspicious individuals and unusual activities around them.
“Security is everybody’s business,” Musa added. “We all need to be prepared.”
