Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments on nuclear deterrence, describing them as a direct threat to Russia.
Speaking on Thursday, Lavrov reacted to Macron’s Wednesday speech, in which the French leader suggested the possibility of extending France’s nuclear protection to European allies.
“If he considers us a threat, convenes a meeting of the chiefs of general staff of European countries and Britain, says it is necessary to use nuclear weapons, prepares to use nuclear weapons against Russia, this is, of course, a threat,” Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russian state news agency RIA.
Macron had earlier warned that Russia’s actions extend beyond Ukraine and pose a real threat to European nations, emphasizing the need for collective security measures.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, now in its third year, has resulted in significant casualties, further escalating geopolitical tensions.
