Abuja, Nigeria – June 6, 2025 — The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed a total of 142 deaths and 747 cases of Lassa fever in 18 states across the country, according to its Week 22 Epidemiological Report.

The agency revealed that the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) now stands at 19.0%, slightly higher than what was recorded during the same period in 2024. In the latest data, the number of new confirmed cases rose from 6 in Week 21 to 8 in Week 22, with Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Nasarawa states accounting for the latest infections.

A closer look at the data shows that 91% of all confirmed cases were reported from five states:

Ondo (31%)

Bauchi (25%)

Edo (16%)

Taraba (16%)

Ebonyi (3%)

The most affected age group is 21–30 years, with a median age of 30. The male-to-female ratio among confirmed cases is 1:0.8, suggesting a slightly higher prevalence among men.

While the total number of suspected and confirmed cases is lower compared to 2024, the NCDC emphasized its continued vigilance and coordination of response activities through its national multi-partner, multi-sectoral Incident Management System (IMS).

To curb the spread, the agency has ramped up public health initiatives, including:

A Lassa fever risk dynamic assessment

Integration of Lassa fever messages into broader Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) risk communication

Launch of the NCDC IPC e-learning platform, powered by DRASA and supported by the Global Fund

In addition, 10 National Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to various states to support on-site control efforts using a One Health approach. Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidelines have also been distributed to health facilities with support from the Robert Koch Institute.

The Centre further reported strengthening of state IPC structures, the Orange Network, and treatment centres to reduce hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in high-burden local government areas.

The NCDC is urging Nigerians to remain vigilant, especially in high-risk areas, and to adopt preventive measures such as avoiding contact with rodents, maintaining good hygiene, and seeking early medical attention if symptoms arise.
