The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle Adio, popularly known as Tafa Sego, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday night at his residence in Surulere, Lagos.
According to reports, six armed men stormed his home on Gbadamosi Close around 11 p.m. with the intent to eliminate the union leader. However, Tafa Sego was not at home at the time, having stepped out earlier in the evening to attend an event with close associates.
Sources revealed that only a security guard was present at the residence when the assailants arrived. The attackers reportedly tied him up, subjected him to a beating, and ransacked the house in a failed effort to locate their target.
Fortunately, no lives were lost, and the NURTW chairman escaped the attack unharmed.
Confirming the incident, a union stakeholder, Prince Idowu Onikoyi, said Tafa Sego is safe and in good health. He added that the matter has been reported to the police, and the injured security guard has filed an official complaint.
The attempted assassination has shaken residents of the previously quiet neighborhood, with many expressing fears over rising insecurity and the possibility of future attacks.
Police officers from Area C Command have visited the scene and commenced investigations, with the guard’s account reportedly providing crucial leads in identifying the perpetrators.
A close associate of the union boss described the incident as alarming, particularly given Tafa Sego’s ongoing efforts to implement reforms aimed at improving the welfare and operational structure of the NURTW in Lagos.
As investigations continue, concerned citizens and stakeholders are calling for heightened security and a swift resolution to prevent further unrest.
