Lagos Lawmakers Insist on Obasa’s Removal, Cite Constitutional Compliance

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have reaffirmed their decision to remove former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, maintaining that the process was conducted lawfully and in strict adherence to constitutional provisions.

Obasa was ousted on Monday, January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 39 lawmakers reconvened during recess to execute his removal. In his place, his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was elected as the new Speaker.

In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode following the lawmakers’ appearance at the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Shangisha, Magodo, Lagos, the Assembly emphasized that the decision was made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act.

Citing Sections 92 and 96 of the Constitution, which outline the procedures for electing and removing a Speaker, the lawmakers asserted that due process was strictly followed.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos. Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution,” the statement read.

The lawmakers also commended the DSS for its professionalism and for ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement during the proceedings. They confirmed that all invited and detained lawmakers had been released.

Reiterating their commitment to legislative duties, the Assembly urged all stakeholders—including the executive and the public—to respect the sanctity of legislative processes and refrain from undue interference.
