The Lagos State High Court will commence its annual vacation on July 21, marking the end of the 2024/2025 legal year of the state judiciary. This was disclosed in a notice issued on June 5 and signed by the Chief Registrar, Mr. Tajudeen Elias.
According to the notice, the vacation will run until September 12. The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, approved the vacation schedule in accordance with Order 49, Rule 4(D) of the High Court of Lagos Civil Procedure Rules, 2019.
Despite the long break, Mr. Elias clarified that the Criminal Division of the High Court will remain active throughout the period.
“Notwithstanding the long vacation, the Criminal Division of the High Court of Lagos State may sit throughout the vacation,” he stated. “Where a judge of a criminal division is on vacation, a vacation judge may be assigned to deal with all pending criminal cases in that court.”
He added that urgent matters in both civil and criminal divisions may still be heard during the vacation upon agreement by all parties and with the approval of the assigned judge.
“Any case or matter may be heard by a judge during the period of vacation (except on a Sunday or public holiday),” Elias noted. “Where such case or matter is urgent, a judge will, at the consent of all parties concerned, agree to hear it.”
Applications for urgent hearings, he explained, can be brought by summons in chambers before either the vacation judge or the judge to whom the substantive case is assigned.
The 2025/2026 legal year of the Lagos State Judiciary is scheduled to begin on September 15, with the official legal year service to be held on September 22.
