Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has firmly denied any involvement in the impeachment of the immediate past Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), dismissed circulating rumors suggesting that Sanwo-Olu was behind the Speaker’s removal, following speculations of a rift between the executive and legislative arms of the government.
“The Governor has no hand in the impeachment; it was purely a legislative matter,” Akosile stated. He emphasized that the governor, who is focused on addressing critical issues impacting the over 20 million residents of Lagos, was not involved in the decision-making process.
The Special Adviser clarified that both the governor and the public were simply spectators to the events in the House of Assembly, where 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted to impeach Obasa due to alleged gross misconduct. The impeachment took place during an emergency plenary session on Monday.
Akosile further explained that the Governor was not privy to any of the discussions leading to the Speaker’s removal, noting, “The Governor watched it like every other person.”
Following the impeachment, the House elected Mrs. Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker, and Mr. Fatai Adebola was appointed as Deputy Speaker. The Assembly also suspended the Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
The events unfold amid ongoing political developments in the state, as lawmakers and the executive continue their separate duties in managing Lagos affairs.
