Normalcy has returned to the Lagos State House of Assembly as newly elected Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, continues to garner widespread support from fellow lawmakers, solidifying her leadership in the wake of recent political turmoil.
On Thursday, legislators dismissed speculations about a fresh move to unseat Meranda, emphasizing that she enjoys overwhelming backing since the speakership crisis shook the Assembly.
It will be recalled that on January 13, 2025, 37 out of 40 lawmakers voted to impeach former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of financial misappropriation and abuse of office, paving the way for Meranda’s emergence as the new Speaker. The development sparked mixed reactions from political stakeholders both within and outside Lagos.
However, the crisis was quelled following a decisive phone call from President Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging unity among lawmakers.
The Assembly reconvened on February 6, 2025, with members commending President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for their administration’s economic policies aimed at improving citizens’ livelihoods.
Following Thursday’s plenary session, the House adjourned sittings until Monday, February 10, at 11 a.m. Sources within the Assembly confirmed that the atmosphere remains calm, with legislators focused on governance.
“The Assembly is peaceful, and everyone is working. Lawmakers are happy, and there is no crisis. People should disregard the impeachment rumors,” a source said.
Meanwhile, Speaker Meranda and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made a public appearance at LTV 8 on Friday, further dispelling speculation of instability within the House.
