The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has refuted claims that Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, agreed to resign as part of the resolution to the recent leadership crisis.
This clarification follows a reconciliation meeting held by Obasa on Tuesday with aggrieved lawmakers, just 24 hours after his re-election. The Speaker has also pledged to withdraw his lawsuit challenging his previous removal.
Obasa was reinstated on Monday after Mojisola Meranda stepped down as Speaker. The crisis had prompted a high-level intervention by the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), led by its chairman, Pa Tajudeen Olusi; APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi; Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN); and other party leaders.
Speculation had emerged that as part of the settlement, Obasa would step down within 48 hours, allowing a new Speaker from Lagos West to take over—a demand made by 34 lawmakers. However, APC spokesman Seye Oladejo dismissed these claims, stating that no such arrangement was agreed upon.
“To the best of my knowledge, there was no time the arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis,” Oladejo said in a chat with Vanguard. He also confirmed that Obasa is set to withdraw his lawsuit against his colleagues in the interest of peace and stability.
Meanwhile, the Speaker’s closed-door meeting with 39 lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Meranda, took place at the Assembly complex on Tuesday afternoon. Sources indicate that the meeting aimed to mend relationships and realign lawmakers toward a unified legislative agenda.
As tensions ease, the Lagos State House of Assembly has been directed to resume its activities on Wednesday.
