Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District on the Labour Party (LP) platform, has praised President Bola Tinubu for his strong and courageous leadership, asserting that the South should retain the presidency in 2027.
In an interactive session with journalists over the weekend in Benin City, Imasuen commended the president for his unwavering resolve in navigating Nigeria’s complex political landscape. He emphasized that President Tinubu’s leadership style demonstrates “unbelievable courage” and should earn him a second term in office.
Imasuen also welcomed the Supreme Court’s recent ruling which dismissed Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party, stating that Abure’s leadership had lost focus and that his actions had been detrimental to the party’s unity.
“The LP, under Abure’s leadership, was more focused on personal agendas than on preserving the party,” Imasuen said. He expressed hope that the party could now focus on rebuilding, though he acknowledged the challenges ahead, given the significant losses in membership following Abure’s tenure.
Discussing the 2027 presidential election, Imasuen noted that there is an unspoken understanding between the North and the South regarding power rotation. “The arrangement is clear: after the North completes its eight years, the South will take its turn,” he said, adding that this should be the path forward in Nigerian politics.
He further stated that despite criticisms of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s policies, Northerners allowed him to complete two terms, and now, it is only fair that President Tinubu, who is doing well, should also be allowed to serve two terms.
Imasuen also lauded the president for his courage in tackling sensitive issues, such as the Tax Bill, despite opposition. He contrasted Tinubu’s actions with other leaders who might back down on difficult decisions for the sake of re-election.
The LP senator also expressed support for Tinubu’s decision to conduct a national census before the 2027 elections, stressing the importance of having accurate population data rather than relying on estimates.
As the only LP senator in Edo State, where the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holds the other two senatorial seats, Imasuen is positioning himself as a key figure in the upcoming electoral battles.
