The National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Umar Farouk Ibrahim, has stated that the party’s former vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, is fully qualified to contest the presidency under the party’s platform.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, Ibrahim emphasized that the Labour Party’s presidential ticket is not reserved for any individual and remains open to all interested aspirants, including Baba-Ahmed.
“Datti is qualified to contest for the presidency just like Peter Obi. The seat of candidacy is not a birthright; it is open for competitive contest,” he said.
He added that should Baba-Ahmed declare interest in the party’s presidential ticket, he is welcome to join the race by following due process, including purchasing the nomination form, mobilizing support, and securing the party’s endorsement through the primaries.
However, Ibrahim expressed concerns over Peter Obi’s recent political engagements, particularly his reported association with the opposition coalition backed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He warned that the Labour Party would not tolerate divided loyalties.
“There’s no way you can continue to romance another political party and still want to keep one leg in Labour Party. That, from the onset, could lead to disqualification,” he cautioned.
The remarks come amid growing speculation about the political direction of key figures in the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
