Kwara Govt to Seal Buildings Without Toilets in Anti-Cholera Drive

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning that any residential or commercial building without a functional toilet facility will be sealed, as part of intensified efforts to prevent cholera and other sanitation-related diseases during the rainy season.

This announcement was made during a routine inspection and public sensitization campaign carried out by KWEPA officials across major streets and communities in Ilorin, the state capital.

Representing the Acting General Manager, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho, the Head of Waste Management Department, Mrs. Tajudeen Fasilat Feyisayo, emphasized the agency’s resolve to curb open defecation and improve public hygiene standards.

“We are warning residents that any house or facility without a toilet will be sealed. This is a proactive measure to stop the spread of cholera and other water-borne diseases, especially now that the rainy season has started,” she stated.

Feyisayo also highlighted the dangers of blocked drainage systems, linking them to potential flooding and environmental hazards.

“When the drainage is blocked, water will always find its way, and this could lead to the destruction of lives and properties. Residents must stop dumping refuse into drains and should register with approved waste collectors for proper disposal,” she added.

She further urged residents to equip their homes and business premises with proper waste bins and sanitation nylons to support the state’s ongoing public health and environmental protection campaign.
