Kwankwaso Criticizes Police Over Alleged Interference in Kano State Affairs

Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has criticized the Nigeria Police Force for what he described as its undue interference in the affairs of Kano State. He expressed concern over the recent terror alert issued by the Kano State Police Command, labeling it as false and harmful to public confidence.

The alert was released on the eve of the Tijjaniyya Sufi Order’s annual Maulud celebration at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. According to Kwankwaso, the warning unnecessarily alarmed residents and visitors attending the event from across Nigeria and beyond.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Kwankwaso, who is also a former governor of Kano State, criticized the police for their actions, suggesting it could damage their credibility and set a troubling precedent.

“Issuing a threat alert of this magnitude, which later turns out to be false, sets a dangerous precedent. I am afraid it will lead to complacency in the event of a genuine threat in the future,” Kwankwaso stated.

He further highlighted the international significance of the Maulud celebration, adding that the police’s actions could tarnish the global reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The conduct of the police leadership in Kano also leaves a bad impression of the Nigeria Police Force globally,” he said.

Kwankwaso called on the Federal Government to avoid becoming embroiled in matters of this nature, urging it instead to prioritize fostering professionalism within the police force.

“The Federal Government must avoid dragging itself into such matters and focus on ensuring professionalism within the police force,” he added.

The incident has sparked discussions about the role of law enforcement in ensuring security without causing unwarranted fear or undermining public trust.
