The Kuteb Elders Forum, representing the Kuteb people of Taraba State residing in Abuja, has strongly condemned recent comments by former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd), in which he urged Nigerians to arm themselves amid rising insecurity.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Forum spokesperson Mr. Filip Ande, the group described Danjuma’s remarks as “dangerous, unconstitutional, and a threat to national unity and peace.”
Danjuma, speaking at an event in Taraba State, had stated that Nigerians should “get arms to defend themselves against banditry,” claiming that government and security agencies alone could not address the country’s worsening security situation.
However, the Kuteb Elders Forum rejected the call, stating:
“While we acknowledge the serious security challenges facing the country, we strongly oppose civilians arming themselves. Such a call violates the constitution and undermines the authority of the government and security institutions.”
The group expressed disappointment that the statement came from a retired general, calling it “unfortunate and reckless.” They further alleged that Danjuma has consistently used his influence to destabilize the traditional leadership of the Kuteb people, particularly the Ukwe Takum stool in Takum LGA.
Citing past incidents, the Forum recalled a similar statement made by Danjuma in 2018, which they claim was followed by violent attacks on Kuteb communities.
“After his call in March 2018, bandits were found operating from one of his farms in Takum, leading to widespread attacks that claimed over 1,000 Kuteb lives, destroyed more than 200 villages, and killed several soldiers, including a commanding officer of the 93 Battalion in Takum,” the statement said.
The Forum urged President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the Inspector General of Police to investigate Danjuma’s latest comments and monitor security developments in Takum, Ussa LGA, and the Yangtu Special Development Area.
While commending the Federal Government for recent security interventions in the region, which have allowed some displaced residents to return to their farms, the Forum appealed to Nigerians to disregard Danjuma’s call.
“The responsibility of safeguarding lives and property lies with the government, not with civilians. We stand with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and support efforts to combat insecurity through lawful and constitutional means,” the statement concluded.
