Kidnapped Imo Catholic Priest Regains Freedom

The Parish Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Izombe, Imo State, Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, who was abducted on Sunday, March 23, 2025, has regained his freedom.

A statement issued early Thursday by the Chancellor/Secretary of the Owerri Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbara, confirmed Ubaechu’s release on Wednesday, March 26.

Fr. Ubaechu was kidnapped in Ejemekuru while en route to Owerri for the annual retreat of priests under the Owerri Archdiocese. Reports indicated that his abductors had demanded a ₦20 million ransom for his release, though details regarding the conditions of his freedom remain undisclosed.

Expressing gratitude, Rev. Fr. Mbara acknowledged the support and prayers of the faithful during the ordeal.

“We thank God for His infinite mercy and for answering our prayers. We appreciate your fraternal solidarity and prayers. To God be the glory.”

While the circumstances surrounding his release remain unclear, his safe return has been met with relief among parishioners and the Catholic community.
