The Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) has assured residents of the state of a free, fair, and credible local government election scheduled for February 15, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference held at the commission’s headquarters in Katsina, the SIEC chairman, Alhaji Lawal Faskari, emphasized that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a transparent electoral process across the 34 local government areas of the state.
“We are fully prepared to conduct an election that meets democratic standards,” Faskari stated confidently.
The chairman revealed that only five political parties will participate in the election: Accord Party, Booth Party, African Action Congress (AAC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 85 other political parties have opted out of the electoral process, a decision the commission respects.
“To ensure a smooth election, we have recruited and trained 20,000 ad-hoc staff who will be deployed across all polling units in the state,” Faskari disclosed, adding that all sensitive election materials will be distributed to local government councils on the eve of the election.
Faskari assured residents that stringent measures have been put in place to monitor the process and prevent irregularities. He also urged all participating political parties to adhere strictly to campaign guidelines, noting that all campaign activities must cease 24 hours before the election, in line with the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).
The chairman expressed gratitude to security agencies and stakeholders for their unwavering support in ensuring a peaceful and credible election in Katsina State.
