KANO — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared voter registration a compulsory duty for every eligible citizen, stressing that political participation is the foundation of good governance and credible leadership.
The governor made the declaration on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voter Registration and Civic Awareness at the Government House, Kano.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, Yusuf tasked the committee with the ambitious goal of ensuring that at least 10 million voters are registered in the ongoing nationwide exercise.
“You should know that your assignment is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication,” Ibrahim said. “Your mandate is to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of this exercise.”
He emphasized that the committee’s responsibilities include monitoring polling units across the state, mobilizing citizens to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and liaising with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure availability of voter cards.
“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness. We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity,” he added. “Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development.”
Responding on behalf of the committee, Chairman and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, pledged the team’s commitment, describing the assignment as a call to national service.
