Kano State Rejects Federal Tax Reform Bills, Advocates Focus on Poverty Alleviation

0

The Kano State Government has strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu’s proposed Tax Reforms Bills, calling them “ill-timed, lopsided, and detrimental to national unity.” The announcement was made during a grand New Year celebration at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa Open Theatre, where thousands gathered to enjoy music and cultural performances.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, expressed the administration’s concerns about the Federal Government’s tax proposals. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, the deputy governor emphasized that the reforms would exacerbate the hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly in the northern region, which is already burdened by hyperinflation and insecurity.

“This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges,” Gwarzo stated. “Nigerians in general, and the North in particular, are groaning under extreme poverty and hunger. The Presidency should prioritize addressing these pressing issues instead of introducing policies that will further harm the welfare of our people.”

The statement was met with thunderous applause, underscoring the residents’ agreement with the government’s position.

Highlighting the state’s developmental strides, the deputy governor detailed achievements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship initiatives under Governor Yusuf’s administration. He also reminded the audience of the Supreme Court’s January 2024 ruling, which reaffirmed Governor Yusuf as the duly elected leader of Kano State. Additionally, he celebrated the reinstatement of Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II as a triumph for justice and the people’s will.

“The authority to appoint an Emir lies solely with the Governor of Kano State,” Gwarzo asserted, urging those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law and maintain peace.

The New Year’s Eve celebration showcased Kano’s vibrant cultural heritage, with performances by prominent Hausa artists creating a festive atmosphere. The evening culminated in a dazzling fireworks display, lighting up the Kano skyline and symbolizing hope for a brighter future.

Deputy Governor Gwarzo encouraged citizens to remain united and steadfast in their support of the government’s efforts, stating, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Yusuf Jibril Falgore, also extended his New Year greetings, urging residents to support the state government’s initiatives aimed at delivering the dividends of democracy.

As Kano ushers in the new year, the state government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to improving the lives of its citizens while advocating for policies that foster national unity and economic stability.
