Kano Police Resist Governor’s Eviction Order for Deposed Emir Pending Court Decision

The Kano State Police Commissioner, AIG Usaini Gumel, has explained why the police did not comply with Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to evict the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa mini palace.

Governor Yusuf, through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, issued the eviction order on Thursday night, instructing the police to remove the 15th Emir of Kano from his current residence.

In an interview with The Punch on Friday, Commissioner Gumel stated that enforcing the eviction order would be premature given the pending legal case on the matter. The same government that issued the order has taken the issue to the State High Court, with a hearing scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2024.

“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday. If we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” he explained.

Security around the Nasarawa mini palace has been intensified. A correspondent observed increased deployment of security personnel, with all four major routes to the palace blocked.

Despite the governor’s order, the deposed Emir remains in the mini palace with his guards and supporters. One supporter, who requested anonymity, confirmed Bayero’s presence and his reception of traditional greetings from loyalists.

The supporter also dismissed rumors of a bulldozer being stationed at the palace for demolition as “social media propaganda.”

“The Emir is still in the mini palace and is receiving traditional greetings from loyal traditional rulers. The rumor about a bulldozer is just social media propaganda,” he said.
