The Kano Concerned Citizens’ Initiative (KCCI) has expressed strong support for the state government’s plan to scrutinize the activities of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) funded by foreign agencies, following alarming allegations linking foreign aid to extremist groups.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Aminu, KCCI emphasized the urgent need to investigate the motives and funding sources of NGOs operating in Kano. This comes after a U.S. Congressman alleged that USAID had inadvertently funded Boko Haram.
“The recent revelation in the US Congress about USAID’s alleged funding of Boko Haram raises serious concerns over the activities of NGOs with foreign ties,” KCCI stated. “Our people are vulnerable and have become prey to exploitation due to bad governance and economic policies driven by globalists.”
The group also criticized certain foreign NGOs for allegedly promoting values contrary to local beliefs, including LGBTQ+ advocacy, calling for stricter oversight.
KCCI praised the Kano State Government’s decision to form a high-powered committee tasked with investigating NGOs’ sources of funding, operational methods, and areas of intervention. The committee aims to establish a regulatory framework that aligns with Kano’s development goals.
“This initiative is long overdue. Kano, as the heartbeat of Northern Nigeria, must not remain a testing ground for foreign agendas,” KCCI added, pledging full support to the committee’s work.
The group urged all Kano residents to cooperate with the committee, calling the move a crucial step toward safeguarding the state from potential security threats.
