Kano Government Subtly Fires Back at Ganduje’s One-Party Proposal with Corruption Dig

0

In what appears to be a calculated response to recent remarks by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, advocating for a one-party system in Nigeria, the Kano State Government has issued a subtle but pointed rebuttal—drawing attention to issues of corruption and selective comparisons.

Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director of Press to the Kano State Government, took to his official Facebook page to post a message that many see as a veiled critique of Ganduje’s statement. The post read:

“China runs a one-party system & it works for them ~ Ganduje
China also executes corrupt politicians & it works for them very well…. ~ Author unknown”

Though the statement did not mention Ganduje directly beyond quoting him, political analysts believe the reference was deliberate, especially given Ganduje’s controversial past. The former Kano governor, now APC National Chairman, recently suggested that Nigeria should consider China’s one-party political model, describing it as effective and efficient.

However, Ganduje’s record in office continues to attract scrutiny, particularly over a 2018 bribery scandal. Video clips published by Daily Nigerian allegedly showed him accepting bundles of U.S. dollars from contractors—a scandal that triggered widespread public outrage and legal controversies.

The Kano State Government’s subtle response seems to call out the inconsistency in Ganduje’s praise of China’s political system while ignoring the country’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption.

Public reactions to the post have been mixed. On Facebook, user Mubarak Aminu Hamisu commented:

“It always makes me laugh when members of Kwankwasiyya Movement mock Ganduje over corruption, because none of you know Kwankwaso better than Ganduje does… Kwankwaso and Ganduje are two sides of the same coin.”

Another commenter, Sadeeq Mahmud Abdurrahman, added:

“In Nigeria, we have hidden monsters who secretly collect two billion naira monthly for what we don’t know.”

These reactions follow recent claims by former Kano SSG, Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, who alleged that the state government had approved a monthly payment of ₦2 billion to former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Bichi said his refusal to support the decision led to his removal from office.

The exchange underscores deepening tensions between Kano’s current administration and political actors from previous regimes, as well as broader questions about Nigeria’s democratic direction and accountability standards.
