The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Master Bakers and Caterers Association of Nigeria, Kano State Chapter, have reached an agreement to increase the size and quality of bread following a reduction in the price of flour.
In a communique issued after a meeting on Wednesday, both parties acknowledged that while the price of a bag of flour had dropped by ₦2,000 due to the intervention of flour companies ahead of Ramadan, the cost of other essential baking ingredients—such as sugar, oil, and butter—remained high.
As a result, instead of lowering prices, bakers have committed to increasing the weight of bread to reflect the reduced flour cost.
The meeting, chaired by the anti-corruption commission’s chairman, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, also addressed public concerns that bakers were purchasing flour at ₦90,000 per bag. It clarified that, since last year, bakers had been buying flour at ₦60,000, with the recent reduction bringing it down further.
To ensure fair pricing and availability of flour, the commission announced plans to engage with the Singer Market Traders Association for compliance monitoring.
The statement concluded by appreciating the understanding and patience of Kano residents regarding the matter.
