Kalu Advocates Partnership Over Politics for South East Development Commission’s Success

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized the need for partnership and collaboration over politics to ensure the success of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

Speaking at a stakeholders’ reception in Enugu, hosted by Prince Arthur Eze, Chairman of Oranto Petroleum, Kalu—represented by the Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. George Ozodinobi—stressed that the commission’s primary mandate is to drive economic growth and regional development.

“The South East Development Commission is not just another institution; it is the engine room of renewal, the architect of a modern South East that matches our spirit of enterprise with the necessary infrastructure and support. It will rebuild what was broken, ignite industries, empower our youth, and give new life to the creative and technological prowess that has always defined us,” Kalu stated.

He urged the SEDC leadership to prioritize transparency and efficiency in utilizing allocated funds, ensuring that projects positively impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

“We must remain steadfast, ensuring that this commission delivers on its promise, that funds are used transparently, and that projects touch the lives of ordinary people,” he added.

Kalu further highlighted the importance of unity in achieving sustainable progress, invoking an Igbo proverb: “If the fingers of one hand come together, they form a mighty fist. Our strength has always been in our collective resolve. The Commission will not thrive on politics; it will thrive on partnership.”

The event also underscored broader efforts to enhance infrastructure in the region, with references to Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo’s achievements. Despite declining a N438 billion federal allocation, Soludo has completed over 410 kilometers of road projects, focusing on previously neglected areas—all without borrowing funds.

Mr. Kamen Ogbonna, a stakeholder at the event, commended Soludo’s fiscal discipline, stating, “It is interesting to note that Soludo has made such progress in three years without borrowing from any source.”

As the SEDC takes shape, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to a development-driven agenda, ensuring that the commission remains a vehicle for transformation, not a tool for political interests.
