There have been reports that the Chairman of the Presidential Panel probing the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission under the watch of its suspended Ag. Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, ordered security operatives to walk out two lawyers on Magu’s legal team from the venue of the investigation.
The Chairman of the panel, Justice Ayo Salami, gave this order after Mr Magu’s lead counsel, Mr Wahab Shittu, introduced other members of the legal team which Justice Salami didn’t agree on and insisted that only Mr Shittu would be allowed to defend the suspended EFCC acting Chairman.
Just last week, it would be recalled that Mr Magu through his lawyer Mr Shittu, asked in a letter to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that the Justice Salami-led panel recall the witnesses who testified against him in his absence at the ongoing corruption probe in the interest of fair-hearing.
According to the letter, Magu’s lawyers asked the panel to investigate, verify and review the recommendations of the Presidential committee on the audit of recovered assets, as it relates to the EFCC and the role the suspended anti-graft agency’s boss played in the mismanagement of the recovered assets.
The lawyers further stated that based on concerns raised, Mr Magu was entitled to participate in the entire proceedings and have an opportunity to cross-examine all the witnesses.
