Donald Trump, the former President of the United States of America, pleaded not guilty to the four-count charges levelled against him. Trump pleaded not guilty to charges that he deliberately and repeatedly lied in an attempt to overturn his presidential election defeat in 2020.
The four counts are conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to impede an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy to violate citizens’ rights.
The first count relates to claimed attempts to hinder vote gathering, counting, and certification.
The second and third count deal with purported attempts to block the certification of electoral college votes in the United States Congress on January 6, 2021, culminating in the Capitol riot.
The fourth charge is about alleged attempts to obstruct citizens’ right to vote and have their votes counted.
The former president will be released under very strict terms, including the prohibition on communicating with anyone believed to be a witness in the case unless through a counsel.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for August 28, just five days after the first Republican presidential primary debate, highlighting the extraordinary circumstances in which the front-runner for the 2024 nomination has an unparalleled federal court schedule.
