The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has convened an emergency closed-door meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, amid escalating internal crises and a wave of high-profile defections.
The meeting, which commenced Tuesday, comes on the heels of a major political shift in Delta State, where the PDP suffered a significant blow following the defection of its former vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and the current Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defections, which have effectively dismantled the PDP’s structure in the oil-rich state, were followed by a mass exodus of key stakeholders. Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, alongside commissioners, local government chairmen, and grassroots political operatives, also crossed over to the APC after a strategic meeting held in Asaba.
The development has deepened concerns within the PDP leadership as the party grapples with growing instability ahead of future elections.
