In a bid to restore political stability in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja. The closed-door meeting took place at Wike’s residence, where Fubara, accompanied by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru, and former Ogun Governor Olusegun Osoba, reportedly appealed for reconciliation.
Sources say Fubara walked directly into Wike’s living room—signifying longstanding familiarity—and humbly appealed to the former governor in a show of respect and a willingness to mend their fractured relationship.
This reconciliation effort comes shortly after Fubara’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu in London and follows the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, driven by fears of escalating unrest and threats from Niger Delta militants.
President Tinubu had previously suspended Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state assembly for six months and appointed a sole administrator to oversee state affairs. Minister Wike had earlier expressed a preference for Fubara’s outright removal but acknowledged that President Tinubu’s intervention was key in preventing it.
The meeting is being seen as a critical step in resolving the deepening political crisis in the state. However, no official statement has been released regarding the outcome.
