Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has passed away in London at the age of 82. The death was confirmed in an official statement released by family spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The former president reportedly died at about 4:30 p.m. in a private clinic in London, following a prolonged illness.
“Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihir Raji’un. The family of the former president has announced his passing this afternoon. May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” the statement read.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, into a Fulani family, Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, after first leading the country as a military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985. Known for his firm stance against corruption and efforts to stabilize the Nigerian economy, Buhari’s legacy spans decades of national service.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his condolences in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Tinubu spoke with the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and offered his heartfelt sympathy to the Buhari family.
In honor of the late leader, President Tinubu has ordered flags flown at half-mast nationwide. He has also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the former president’s remains back to Nigeria.
Details regarding funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in accordance with Islamic rites.
