The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release prominent businesswoman and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, from custody within 24 hours.
Justice Inyang Ekwo issued the order on Wednesday during a brief ruling and further mandated all parties involved, particularly the EFCC, to return to court on May 2 with an update on compliance.
Earlier in the day, EFCC operatives brought Achimugu to court, following the judge’s earlier directive. She arrived at approximately 11:35 a.m., flanked by two female EFCC officers.
The court had, on Monday, instructed Achimugu—who was previously reported to have left the country—to appear before the anti-graft agency by 12 noon on Tuesday. The EFCC was then ordered to return her to court on Wednesday with a status report.
According to reports, Achimugu was taken into custody by EFCC officials upon her return to Nigeria at about 5:00 a.m. and has remained detained since then.
The case continues to draw public interest due to Achimugu’s profile and the circumstances surrounding her arrest.
