The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.
The revered monarch died on Sunday, July 1, 2025, marking the end of a remarkable 64-year reign that began on April 2, 1960. Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona was a distinguished member of the House of Anikinaiya and one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers.
His death comes just hours after the passing of his long-time friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.
Oba Adetona was widely respected for his leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the development of Ijebuland and the Yoruba nation at large. His legacy leaves an indelible mark on traditional rulership and public life in Nigeria.
