MINNA — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised ex-Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), describing his Minna hilltop residence as a “Mecca of sort” for Nigerians because of his enduring influence and leadership qualities.
Jonathan made the remark on Sunday when he led a delegation of well-wishers to celebrate with Babangida on his 84th birthday.
He lauded the former military ruler as a leader who consistently placed national unity above sectional interests.
“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but Gen. Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the country. That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sort. People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of IBB,” Jonathan said.
According to the former president, Babangida will continue to be celebrated for his role in promoting peace and national cohesion.
“Our prayer for him is for God to grant him a long life so that he can continue to mentor the younger ones to follow his exemplary footsteps,” he added.
The low-key celebration featured prayers and presentation of symbolic gifts from associates and admirers of the former military leader.
