Jimi Disu Warns Peter Obi: “Don’t Be Atiku’s Spare Tyre” in Coalition Talks

Veteran journalist, Jimi Disu, has urged former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to reject any offer of a vice presidential slot from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Atiku Abubakar.

Disu, speaking on Nigeria Info FM 99.3, cautioned Obi against settling for the vice presidency, describing the position as powerless under Nigeria’s constitution.

“What is being said is that Peter Obi is being offered the vice presidential slot because of Atiku from the North. It’s all nice for Atiku, but one thing I will tell Peter Obi is that a Vice President is a spare tyre, and you are dealing with a seasoned politician,” Disu said.

He warned that Obi could be sidelined if Atiku secures the presidency, stressing that the role of Vice President carries no statutory power and could be politically insignificant.

“It’s left to you to know if you can trust this man not to throw you to the dustbin by the time he becomes the president. If I were Obi, I would not risk it because it doesn’t make sense,” he added.

This comes amid speculation that Obi has agreed to serve as Atiku’s running mate in a proposed coalition ahead of the 2027 elections — a claim Obi has publicly denied, insisting that his involvement in any alliance is focused solely on addressing Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges such as poverty and bad governance.

Disu concluded with a reminder of past power struggles within the presidency: “We have a Vice President that said he would handle defence while his president would handle other things — we all saw how that played out.”

The political future of the proposed coalition remains uncertain as discussions continue behind closed doors.
