The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially taken responsibility for the widespread failure recorded in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), citing technical glitches and operational lapses.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, a visibly emotional JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, tearfully acknowledged the shortcomings of the Board, expressing deep regret over the negative experiences faced by thousands of candidates.
“I take full responsibility for the negligence that occurred,” he stated, pausing multiple times to wipe tears from his face with a handkerchief.
Following the outcry from candidates and stakeholders nationwide, JAMB has announced that a total of 379,997 candidates will retake the examination. The decision comes in response to confirmed irregularities, including system failures and abnormally low scores reported across several centres.
Prof. Oloyede disclosed that 65 centres in Lagos State and 92 centres in the Owerri Zone, covering the five states in the South-East, are affected and will be scheduled for a re-sit.
The Board assured that measures are being put in place to ensure the integrity and smooth conduct of the re-examination process.
