Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has unveiled BitChat, a new messaging platform designed to operate without internet access, positioning it as a potential challenger to Elon Musk’s rebranded Twitter platform, X.
Dorsey introduced the project in a recent post on X, describing BitChat as a personal experiment focused on Bluetooth mesh networking, message encryption, and decentralised communication models.
“My weekend project is to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store-and-forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things,” Dorsey wrote.
BitChat utilizes a store-and-forward architecture, allowing messages to hop across multiple Bluetooth-enabled devices until they reach the intended recipient — effectively bypassing the need for traditional internet connectivity.
The announcement marks a bold step by Dorsey into the world of alternative communication networks, coming years after his November 2021 resignation from Twitter. In October 2022, billionaire Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion and subsequently rebranded it as X.
Though still in its early stages, BitChat has sparked interest for its innovative approach to secure, decentralised messaging in a hyper-connected world.
