Jabi Lake Mall shuts operations over security threats

Jabi Lake Mall has announced that it would shut operations over security threats in Abuja.

Recall United States Embassy on Sunday, October 23, 2022, issued a security alert on the elevated risk of terror attacks in Abuja.

In a security alert issued to its nationals, the Embassy said targets may include but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations.

In a post on the mall’s Instagram page @jabilakemallnigeria, the management revealed that although it wasn’t its intention to disrupt activities, they had taken the decision for the safety of shoppers and staff of the establishment.

They added that they were reviewing the security situation with relevant authorities and that the mall would be reopened as soon as possible.

The statement reads; “Jabi Lake Mall will be closed today, Thursday, 27 October 2022. This decision has been taken in the overall interest of the safety of all staff and customers of the mall.

“Centre Management is committed to minimising any disruptions; however, the safety of our staff and shoppers remains our highest priority.

“Management is constantly reviewing the security situation in consultation with relevant security authorities and will inform you when the mall will be re-opened.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to provide you with a quality shopping experience soon”.

Meanwhile, in an earlier reaction to the development, the Department of State Services (DSS) has said there is no cause for alarm over the US alert.

In a statement by DSS Spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, “The Department of State Services (DSS) has received several inquiries relating to the security advisory issued by the US Embassy in Abuja, today, Sunday, October 23, 2022. The public may recall that the Service had variously issued similar warnings in the past.

“While advising that necessary precautions are taken by all and sundry, the populace is enjoined to remain alert and assist security agencies with useful information regarding threats and suspicious criminal acts around them.

“Meanwhile, the Service calls for calm as it works with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to maintain peace and order in and beyond Abuja.”
