Following the intervention of US Vice President Joe Biden, Israel has reopened the water supply in southern Gaza. This decision was made in response to prior pronouncements by Israel’s Energy Minister, Israel Katz, who stated that no water supply would be restored until certain conditions were met.
However, Minister Katz revealed to Mail Online on Sunday that President Biden’s discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu played a role in the decision to resume the water supply.
During a speech in Philadelphia on Friday, President Biden emphasized the necessity of protecting Palestinians and expressed his sorrow for the ‘innocent lives lost, including at least 27 Americans’ as a result of the recent violence. He referred to Palestinian hardship and emphasized the importance of the “rule of law.”
It was just the latest occasion he tried to temper his generally unwavering support for Israel. He has frequently stated this week that both the United States and Israel recognize the value of the ‘rule of law.’
This decision is considered part of the ongoing diplomatic attempts to address the region’s crisis, with the US administration calling for civilian safety and adherence to international law.
In contrast, Israel has deployed its armed forces to the Gaza border, ready to respond to the escalating battle with Hamas. The situation in the region remains dangerous, with Israel preparing for possible military action.
