Islamic scholars have called for clerics to enhance their understanding of Sharia law and avoid disseminating misleading messages, especially in the age of technology where misinformation can easily spread via social media, potentially causing conflict. The call was made during the 16th Annual Islamic International Conference organized by the Daaru Na’im Academy for Sharia Science of Nigeria in Lagos, with the theme, “The Jurisprudence of Fatwa and its Relationship with Maqasid-based Fiqh.”
Sheikh Imran Eleha, Conference Supervisor and Director General of Daaru Na’im Academy, highlighted the growing challenge of clerics issuing incorrect Fatwas, which have been causing confusion among followers. He emphasized the importance of aligning Fatwas with the core objectives of Sharia and addressing the risks of misinformation.
Dr. Awwad bin Sabti Al-Anazi, Undersecretary for Islamic Affairs in Saudi Arabia, echoed the sentiment, stressing that Prophet Muhammad had emphasized the need for clerics to seek knowledge. He added that Saudi Arabia has stringent measures in place to regulate Fatwa issuance to prevent errors. The Saudi government has established a committee, known as The Committee of Crown Scholars, to oversee Fatwa matters, with the Grand Mufti as the authoritative figure for issuing Fatwas on issues with broader implications.
Dr. Bilal ElHallak, a representative from the United States Delegation, also underscored that Fatwas should not be based on personal opinion or misinterpretation. Prompt intervention by qualified scholars is essential to mitigate the spread of false teachings.
Professor Abdulrazzaq Alaro from the University of Ilorin’s Islamic Law Department warned against the dangers of allowing unqualified individuals to issue Fatwas, as this contributes to misinformation.
The conference was attended by delegates from several countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United States, Oman, Algeria, Chad, Cote D’Ivoire, Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria, all gathering to address the challenges of Fatwa issuance and ensure its alignment with Islamic law.
