TEHRAN — Iran’s armed forces on Tuesday accused Israel of launching multiple airstrikes on Iranian territory in the early hours of the morning, despite a ceasefire agreement announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump to halt hostilities between the two nations.
According to a spokesman for the Iranian armed forces command, the Israeli military carried out “three waves of attacks on sites in Iranian territory until 9:00 am (05:30 GMT)” Tuesday. The statement, broadcast on Iran’s state television, did not provide details on the specific targets or the extent of the damage.
The accusation follows a short-lived truce brokered by Trump on Monday after nearly two weeks of intense cross-border conflict. The ceasefire was intended to de-escalate tensions following a deadly exchange of missile and drone strikes between the two regional rivals.
Iran’s claim, which has been reported by several international outlets including AFP, Reuters, and Iranian state media, adds a new layer of uncertainty to the fragile peace effort. Iranian officials have not confirmed whether the alleged attacks resulted in any casualties or significant destruction.
Israel has yet to respond officially to Iran’s latest accusation. However, earlier on Tuesday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that he had authorised “powerful and decisive” strikes against targets in Tehran after accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire by launching missiles into northern Israel overnight. Iran has denied launching any fresh attacks since the ceasefire took effect.
The Iranian military’s statement marks the first official acknowledgment from Tehran that it had come under renewed Israeli assault after the truce was declared. It raises fears that the ceasefire, which had been cautiously welcomed by global leaders, may already be collapsing.
In Washington, the White House has not issued a formal response, though U.S. officials earlier urged both parties to respect the terms of the agreement and avoid further escalation.
The broader conflict erupted following a controversial Israeli airstrike on an Iranian diplomatic facility in Syria, leading to a sharp military response from Iran and a series of retaliatory operations. The hostilities have since resulted in significant casualties on both sides, including civilians.
As tensions rise again, regional observers warn that the situation remains volatile and that the ceasefire’s survival now hinges on whether both nations can de-escalate and return to diplomacy.
This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
