IPoB Slams FG Over “Worthless” Death Certificate, Alleges Plot to Distract From Collapsing Case Against Nnamdi Kanu

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) has accused the Federal Government of employing diversionary tactics to shift public focus from what it described as the “disgraceful collapse” of its prosecution against detained Biafra agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a strongly worded statement on Monday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPoB condemned what it called a desperate attempt by the government and certain media outlets to manipulate public opinion by introducing irrelevant narratives—particularly, the recent focus on the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak.

The group described Kanu as a “prisoner of conscience” being held in violation of both Nigerian and international laws, insisting that the ongoing legal proceedings against him are politically motivated and lacking evidential support.

According to IPoB, a key prosecution witness, identified as PW-BBB, allegedly admitted under oath that there is no official investigation report backing the charges against Kanu—an admission the group says signals the collapse of the federal case. Rather than report this development, IPoB claimed, the media is being flooded with unrelated stories involving the death of Gulak, a former political aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The so-called death certificate of Ahmed Gulak has no relevance to this case,” the statement said. “The prosecuting counsel, Awomolo SAN, resorted to unethical tactics by attempting to reintroduce evidence after completing his examination-in-chief. This is a clear sign of desperation and bad faith.”

IPoB further clarified that its sit-at-home directive in May 2021 was observed on Monday, May 31, while Gulak was murdered a day earlier on Sunday, May 30—making any attempt to link the group to his death both “false and criminal.”

The statement accused the Nigerian government of continuing a legacy of misinformation aimed at demonizing the Igbo ethnic group, drawing parallels with how the 1966 coup was historically misrepresented.

Calling on journalists and media houses to uphold the principles of truth and objectivity, IPoB urged for the full court transcript to be made public, insisting that “no amount of propaganda will bury the truth.”

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains unlawfully detained,” the group said. “We demand his immediate and unconditional release.”
