The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) across West Africa through technical assistance and knowledge sharing to enhance democratic processes in the region.
This commitment was highlighted on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, as INEC hosted high-ranking electoral officials from Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, and Sierra Leone at its headquarters in Abuja.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, alongside National Commissioners, welcomed the delegation in a diplomatic engagement aimed at deepening electoral cooperation. Prof. Yakubu emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to fostering credible elections beyond its borders, stating, *“Strengthening electoral integrity is a collective effort, and Nigeria is always ready to share its experiences and expertise.”*
The visiting officials expressed appreciation for INEC’s contributions to electoral reforms in their respective countries. A delegate from Liberia praised INEC’s guidance, describing it as *“invaluable to our electoral reforms.”*
INEC National Commissioner, Major General Modibbo Alkali (Rtd), underscored the link between electoral integrity and regional stability, drawing from his experience in ECOMOG peacekeeping missions.
The engagement concluded with a symbolic exchange of plaques and INEC’s report on Nigeria’s 2023 general elections. INEC’s continued leadership in electoral administration reinforces the collective vision for transparent and credible elections across West Africa.
