INEC Must Face Consequences for Electoral Failures – Idahosa

0

The 2023 vice presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Isaac Idahosa, has called for accountability within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and among public officials over electoral failures.

Speaking on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme, on Wednesday, Idahosa emphasized the need for consequences to deter repeated misconduct in Nigeria’s electoral system.

“We don’t punish anybody for what they do; there are no consequences, so they keep on repeating it,” he said. “INEC does this, and nobody puts them in check, so it repeats itself. Once there are no consequences for actions or inactions, then a repeat will occur because there is no accountability.”

INEC introduced the Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the 2023 general elections, but the efficiency of these technologies was widely criticized. Many politicians cited failures in the systems, while INEC attributed the issues to technical glitches.

Idahosa further decried the growing influence of individuals over institutions, warning that such imbalances undermine governance.

“Money politicking has taken over the system,” he added, highlighting the urgent need for electoral reforms and accountability in Nigeria’s democracy.
