GUSAU — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a supplementary election for five polling units in the Kaura Namoda South State Assembly constituency on Wednesday, August 21.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Zamfara State, Dr. Mahmmud Isah, announced the development at a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau on Tuesday.
He explained that the supplementary poll became necessary following the cancellation of results from five polling units during the August 16 by-election over alleged irregularities.
According to him, the exercise will be held in three polling units in Kyambarawa ward — Shiyar Magaji (Kofar Hamza) 002, Tukasu (Sabuwar Kasuwa) 009, and Kofar Fafa (Shiyar Fada). Two additional polling units in Sakajiki ward — Alko (Shiyar Kudu) 002 and Shiyar Nufawa (Kofar MD Nuhu) 007 — will also participate.
INEC had declared the August 16 by-election inconclusive, citing provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. The Returning Officer, Prof. Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University, Gusau, said there are 5,446 registered voters in the affected polling units, with 3,265 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected.
Before the cancellations, results showed the All Progressives Congress (APC) leading with 7,001 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed with 5,339 votes — a margin of 1,662. However, the margin was lower than the number of collected PVCs in the affected areas, necessitating the supplementary poll.
