Ikeja Explosion: One Dead, Four in Critical Condition as Victims Battle for Survival

0

Tragedy struck in the Ikeja area of Lagos on Friday following a devastating explosion that rocked a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) dealer’s shop on Kodesho Street, near the bustling Computer Village.

As of Saturday evening, one of the five victims earlier reported to have sustained serious injuries succumbed to the burns, while four others are currently battling for their lives at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

A tech dealer in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death, stating, “We lost one of them on Saturday evening. The doctors made efforts to save him, but he didn’t make it. The others are still in critical condition.”

The explosion, which occurred around 6:35 p.m., caused widespread panic in the popular electronics hub and drew emergency responders to the scene.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said, “Yes, we have been informed that one of the victims passed away on Saturday. The investigation into the cause of the explosion is still ongoing. We will make our findings public once the investigation is concluded.”

The incident adds to a series of recent explosive tragedies in Lagos. Just days before, a welder was killed and three others injured in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin after a military-grade grenade, reportedly being dismantled in a scrap yard, detonated.

The repeated explosions have heightened concerns over public safety, especially regarding the handling of hazardous materials in densely populated urban areas.

Authorities are urging residents to report suspicious materials and exercise caution to prevent further loss of life.
