IGP Withdraw Invitation to Emir of Kano Over Sallah Day Incident

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has officially withdrawn the invitation extended to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, in connection with a deadly altercation that occurred during the Sallah festivities in Kano.

The police chief clarified the withdrawal of the invitation, stating that it was prompted by the intervention of various stakeholders. Despite the retraction, Egbetokun directed the Kano State Police Command to obtain Sanusi’s statement regarding the events surrounding the incident.

The incident unfolded after Emir Sanusi attended Eid prayers on foot but later rode a horse during his return to the palace, sparking unrest. According to Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, this led to a confrontation with local youths, resulting in the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru and several others injured.

Prior to the Sallah celebrations, police intelligence had revealed that two rival Emirs in Kano—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—were planning separate Durbar Festivals. The Durbar, a longstanding tradition, involves Emirs parading on horseback, and the police had intervened to prevent potential violence. A joint agreement was made to suspend the events in order to maintain peace.

Despite this agreement, Emir Sanusi’s decision to ride a horse after Eid prayers triggered the clash. The police had warned of potential violence and worked with both Emirs and the Kano State Government to prevent the situation from escalating. Following the tragic incident, the police confirmed that arrests have been made, and an investigation is underway.

The police emphasized that their actions are driven solely by the principles of justice and professionalism, with the commitment to ensuring all those responsible are held accountable.
